Learning to fix vintage stereo receivers and TV's?
I would like to learn how to fix older 70's stereos and basic electronics like TV's and stuff. So I am wonder what Is the best and easiest way to go about that? I watch videos on Youtube about this stuff and while that does gives me some Info It really doesn't give me everything. I don't want to be a electronic tech about It but want It to be more of a hobby but still know a good bit about It to know what I'm doing. I think I would do better with a hands on approach and watching videos about It. I don't want to spend a great deal of money on It like taking a local collage course or something unless It wasn't too bad and would help me. Like I said It would be more of a hobby so I could buy stereos and fix them up myself and do maintenance on them. Any suggestions? Maybe there are some people who are doing the same thing and could tell how they went about It? Thanks
I have learned all of what I know about the function and repair of electronics
without taking any classes or training. That's why, at almost 52 years of age,
I still have an awful lot to learn before I get good at it.
I strongly recommend that you take advantage of a community-college course
in basic electronics, if possible, so that you can learn it faster than I have.
At least get a copy of the Radio Amateur's Handbook (an annual publication,
but any year from 1980 on should be sufficient; check your local library)
and use it to learn the basics of electronics.
I've seen a few books on basic electronic repair, but they were so basic
that no one who really wanted to learn anything could benefit from them.
If you can find an RCA RC-30 tube manual, it would be a good start on
your way to understanding what is going on in equipment from long before
the 1970's, some of which was pretty good even by today's standards.
Simple and not-so-simple kits, suggested by another answerer,
are available from a number of sources (Velleman, Ramsey,
Datak, and others). Ramsey also sells some Velleman products.
I've assembled a few kits, the most complex of which is a Ramsey AM-25 transmitter.
Good overall design, but its input impedance is too low for line-level signals.
I knew, and implemented, a cheap and easy remedy.
If there is an independent (that is, not Radio Shack)
electronic parts store near you, go have a look around.
I'm fortunate to live in a town with such a store, and it is
large enough to stock almost every type of electronic part
anyone could need or want at a moment's notice
(but, of course, still far short of all that is available).
Get familiar with the locations of things in the place so that
when you go in to buy something, you can spend more time
talking to and learning from the technicians who
frequent the store for their own needs.
You never know in advance what sort of useful information
one of them will provide to you free of charge.
