Retrofitting a 12v electrical socket into a car?
The car in question is a '71 VW Microbus, I don't believe that they had these sockets installed.
Is it a matter of simply hooking it up to the alternator? The battery in series?
Truth be told, I'm going to be putting in an inverter afterwards, to run a small fridge, microwave, and some other high amperage devices. Is there a way to just efficiently bypass the socket idea and immediately put in some sort of wall jack? Am I not knowledgeable enough to be screwing with this? I do basic wiring schemes, and being a musician, I deal with tube amps and such, and do all my own maintenance on those.

What`s wrong with just hooking it directly to the battery with a switch and a small dash light to let you know it is powered up. Just make sure it is fused and capable of all your high amperage toys. Any large inverter (over 1000 watts) is not designed to be plugged in and has to be hooked directly to the battery. Most inverters will not handle a fridge and a microwave at the same time. The fridge usually has a large start up draw and if something else is running when it starts up it will usually overload the unit, and also if you have a large inverter it will drain your battery in a very short period of time, and your 71 charging system is not a very high amperage to begin with. Maybe a 12 volt fridge would be a better idea. Or a small gen set which is available for about the same price as a large inverter.
