Can an automatic transmission be used in a four cylinder dirt track race? Why do I see a lot of manual trans?
It's usable, but most likely will not be competitive. While it is true that a manual lets you select the gear, this is not really any major advantage in racing (and can be setup to work just as well on an automatic in most cases). The difference comes down to performance.
An automatic transmissions weighs more than a manual. Even if you chassis is under the minimum weight, this still means you have less choice in where you place the ballast. And if you are not under minimum weight, then you are having to push more weight (which also means more fuel and even more weight). Small amounts can make a big difference over the course of a race!
As much as weight though is that an automatic transmission uses a torque converter and will have more parasitic power loss.
So, given the choice between a transmission that weighs less and gets more power to the wheels, or the automatic, which do you think most racers would choose? The flexibility of the manual for the driver is just a bonus.
