Brewing Beer at Home – Step by Step
You probably already know that the cost of beer keeps increasing every time you go to buy it. Well, how would you like to make your own beer? Brewing beer at home can save you a bundle of money, and is not as hard as you think it might be. Could you use some tips on how to make beer at home so you don't have to pay so much at the store? Then have a look at how easy making beer at home can be.
What you need
The first thing you will have to do is assemble all of your equipment and ingredients for your home microbrewery. The list includes a 5 gallon brew pot, a standard strainer, a large funnel, a rolling pin, and a liquid thermometer. Other equipment such as a 5 gallon container of bottled water, a 5 gallon scratch free bucket, two 3 foot sections of 3/8" clear aquarium tubing, and glass bottles with caps for the finished beer. The ingredients for the home brew can be purchased at any brewery supply shop, or ordered through the internet. You will need the following ingredients for each batch of beer. 6 lbs. malt extract light dried, ½ lb. crushed crystal malt, 1 oz. brewers hop pellets, 1 pkg. brewers yeast, and a cup of sugar for bottling.
Boiling Beer
Coarsely grind the crystal malt with a rolling pin to begin the brewing process. From your 5 gallon plastic water bottle, fill the brew pot to within 3" of the top and add the crushed malt. Turn the burner on the stove to medium, and heat the mixture to about 155 degrees ,then cover the pot and let stand for 30 minutes and skim with a strainer to remove as much of the malt as possible. The water will then need to be brought to a rolling boil. When the water begins to boil again add the hop pellets and continue to boil for an hour. Then remove the brewing pot from the heat and let it cool for ten minutes.
Fermentation
Empty the leftover water from the water bottle, as this will serve as the fermentation container. Pour the beer from the brew pot into the container using the funnel. The pkg. yeast will have to be added to the container. You will need to drill a hole into the cap of the container so that one end of the clear vinyl tube can be inserted into it.The tube and cap can be sealed with some wax to make it airtight. Placing the other end of the tube in a cup of water, move the container to a cool dark place for a week to ten days to let it ferment.
Second fermentation
Next you will want to boil 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water and then let it cool down. After the sugar water has cooled, add it to the 5 gallon plastic container, then use the other tube to siphon off the beer from the water container into the plastic container without stirring up the sediment at the bottom. After this step the beer can be bottled and set aside for seven to ten more days before you can drink it. Now that you know how to make beer at home there is no reason to buy it at the store. And now that you are brewing beer at home you can make your own beer.
