So – what are the uses of USB turntable equipment?
Talk to most DJs today and you'll hear what pretty much amounts to a rant of unbridled length and enthusiasm, about the USB turntable. It's great. It's ground breaking. It's handy. It's portable. It's the future. But what actually is it? For those who don't know: a USB turntable is a record deck that plugs into a computer by means of a USB port. It uses power from the computer to run itself and the signal from the platen arm is sent straight into the PC or laptop. That's it. Simple. So what are the uses of USB turntable equipment? What, in other words, is so great about a record deck you can plug into a PC?
First up: vinyl, its protection and use. Vinyl is precious, vinyl is fragile – and vinyl is extremely heavy when you carry it around in boxes. It's also very, very valuable. It's basically like using an electronic music programme live in your set – so you have to be good and you have to have a thorough command of the software. Sampling direct from vinyl without destroying the record; recording practice sessions for digital playback; recording demos straight to hard drive, to be emailed to clubs and promoters; and for direct synching with computer controlled light shows or visuals. By playing a USB record deck straight into a computer running a visual display for your show or gig, you can ensure that the sights and sounds are always matched.
