Using a digital voice recorder for paranormal investigations
Digital voice recorders are a key tool in the paranormal investigator's arsenal for capturing EVPs (electronic voice phenomena). There are many different models to which to choose. Voice recorders which require tapes will usually record of pick up the sound of the motor which drive the tape. When considering the purchase of a digital voice recorder consider one that has plenty of memory, a microphone jack, a USB 2.0 jack, a battery life meter, and a headphone jack. Prices range from about $35 to $150.
Here are some important things to consider when using a digital voice recorder for a paranormal investigation:
- This instrument can be used while scanning an area or simply left in any room or area where paranormal activity has been cited.
- Begin recording as soon as you enter an investigation site. Some of the best EVPs have been recorded during the initial "walk through" or when least expected.
- Consider adding an external microphone which can pick up sounds with superior sound quality.
- A good tool to use in conjunction with the EMF meter when EMF spikes occur which may mean the presence of a spirit.
- A good tool to use in conjunction with a ambient temperature meter when cold spots occur.
- Should be kept away from EMF meters which can cause false readings on the EMF meter.
- Never whisper during EVP sessions. This will create false evidence.
- When holding it in your hand care should be taken to avoid recording "jostling" noises which will be recorded and will cover any EVPs which may have been recorded.
- Replace if you have any doubt on the strength of the batteries.
- Tag each file by stating your name, who is present, the date, location, and time.
- Any natural or man-made noises should be verbally identified or "tagged."
- Try to limit your recording files to no more than about 20 minutes. Then, when you review your evidence you will only be reviewing 20 minute segments.
- At the end of the investigation, be sure to handle the voice recorder with care to avoid accidental erasure of your recording sessions. Consider backing your files on a laptop or external hard drive at the investigation if one is available.
- When asking questions allow sufficient time to capture any possible responses before asking the next question.
- Try to keep your questions as short as possible. Pause 20 seconds between questions.
- Try to be creative in the questions you ask. Don't be afraid to ask "What is your favorite beer?"
- The more voice recorders placed during an investigation improves the chance of getting EVPs.
- When leaving the voice recorder in an area, look for anything that might create unwanted noise like a fan, lights, heater, air conditioning unit, etc. These will contaminate the EVP session.
- When leaving the voice recorder in an area, try to seal off the area from other investigators or other people which could contaminate the evidence.
- If your voice recorder has "voice activation" do not use it. They are not sensitive enough to pick up all EVPs. Always use the "manual" mode.
- Try to avoid recording where people are away from the recorder talking some distance away which can create false positives.
- While it may seem obvious, it must be stated. Be sure to review your EVP sessions. Sadly, many paranormal investigators don't even bother to review their EVP sessions. Then, why bother?
- Review the EVP session with a pen and paper and write down which file and the time stamp when something unusual occurs and describe the event.
- To conduct a good review, your reviewing time should almost double the playback time. If you have 1 hour of material, it should take you 2 hours to review it.
- Use a audio software like Wavepad or Audacity to review EVP sessions.
- Take periodic breaks to avoid listening fatigue.
- Use headphone while reviewing EVP session to improve what you are hearing. The best headphones cover your entire ear.
- Don't hesitate to do a second review. You may find something you missed.
- Try to put yourself into a quiet area when reviewing EVP sessions. Distractive background noise can limit your ability to listen.
- If your "EVP ear" is undeveloped, learn to develop your ear for hearing EVPs by listening to many of them which are available on the web. Listen with earphones on too. Sometimes it takes a trained ear to hear EVPs.
