Aware of this responsibility, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) strives to develop a fool proof program to keep in check accidents and injuries stemming from consumption of prohibited drugs or alcohol abuse and the compromise on safety norms that follows the abuse. The employer has to make sure all the tests are carried out in adherence to the procedures and standards put forth in 49 CFR part 40.
Substance abuse at workplace can have many unpleasant effects like loss of productivity, legal tangles, attrition, security risks and also pose a threat to people who come in contact with the abuser like fellow employees and customers.
